Obsidian Glass Fiber Reinforced PA6 [Markforged ONYX Alternative]

Obsidian-GF Glass Fiber Reinforced PA6 filament was formulated to offer rich colorful options in an engineering-grade material for your Markforged printer. Obsidian-GF is a lower-cost drop-in Markforged Onyx Alternative suitable for all Markforged printers. We developed this material after extensive analysis and testing on our own in-house Markforged printer and many outside beta testers. The result is a seamless printing experience that produces parts with an outstanding appearance and excellent mechanical properties. Made using premium chopped glass fiber and PA6 copolymer, Obsidian-GF is an excellent alternative to Onyx that allows our customers choose brilliant colors, excellent mechanical properties, and save money when using your Markforged printer.

Don’t have a Markforged printer? That’s no problem – Obsidian-GF is also compatible with all non-Markforged printers that are suitable for printing PA6+GF.  Take advantage of the excellent strength, stiffness, and appearance of this specialty material without over spending on Markforged Onyx.

Benefits of Obsidian-GF PA6+GF [Markforged Onyx Alternative]:

  • Drop-in for Onyx without any changes required to print settings
  • >9 Brilliant Colors
  • >9 More ductile (less brittle) than CF reinforced PA6/li>
  • >30% savings vs. Markforged Onyx
  • Excellent strength and stiffness
  • Resistant to aliphatic hydrocarbons (oil/gas/lubricants)
  • Superior dimensional stability (low warp/shrink/CTE)
  • Compatible with Markforged FX20, X7, X5, X3, Mark Two, Onyx Pro, and Onyx One printers

Markforged Print Recommendations:

  • Obsidian™ was formulated to be a drop-in for Onyx™ without any changes to the print settings.

Recommended Print Settings for Non-Markforged Printers:

  • Extruder: 265-285°C
  • Bed Temp: 90-110°C
  • Nozzle: We currently recommend a hardened steel nozzle
  • Bed Prep: Magigoo Bed Prep
  • Heated Chamber: Recommended
  • Supports: AquaTek™ water soluble X1 USM Universal Support Material is designed to work with complex models
  • Drying Instructions: 90°C for 4 hours if the filament exhibits signs of moisture

Glass Fiber Reinforced Filament

What Is It?

Fibers made of glass reinforced into the polymer during manufacturing and aligned along the axis of filament.

This, along with their physical makeup, give this material enormous strength and mechanical properties.

What Does It Do?

Glass fiber reinforcement gives material a lot of desirable properties:

  • High strength
  • High stiffness
  • High chemical resistance
  • Low thermal expansion

How Does It Work?

Reinforcing plastic with glass fibers produces a 3D printing filament which exhibits the best properties of both fiberglass and the plastic of choice.

What Is It Good For?

Ideal for any applications that require strength and rigidity.

For these reasons, glass fiber reinforced filament is very popular in automotive, mechanical, civil engineering, and research industries.

I have a Makerbot replicator 2x, Is this filament compatible with this machine?

Add Response

That is very close to ABS's heat deflection temperature (88 - 98 °C). ABS is durable and will last quite a long time at room temperature, however under the conditions you are talking about there is no way it is going to last that long.

Do you have a recommended max operating temperature (environment) suggested for this material, 1.75mm "natural" colored ABS, assuming it will be in at a certain temp, 24 hours a day for 10 years? i.e, Will my designed part withstand being at 200F for years without melting, warping, breaking down, etc? Thanks.
