FAQ - The Shapeoko 5 Pro CNC Machine
Is there a Shapeoko 5 AND Shapeoko 5 Pro CNC available?
- No. There is only the Shapeoko 5 Pro available at this time. The terms "shapeoko 5" and "shapeoko 5 pro" are currently used interchangeably to refer to the Shapeoko 5 Pro CNC Router.
What makes the Shapeoko 5 Pro different from the Shapeoko 3, Shapeoko 4, Shapeoko Pro?
- The Shapeoko 5 Pro is completely different from the Shapeoko 3, Shapeoko 4, and Shapeoko Pro in its components (and therefore performance). From the Motion System, right down to the electronics, Shapeoko 5 uses completely new parts that are different from these 3 iterations of the Shapeoko and make it even more accurate and high performing than ever.
Shapeoko 5 Pro vs. Shapeoko HDM—which one should I get?
- Fundamentally, the Shapeoko HDM is a more powerful machine and ideal if you want to primarily cut aluminum and brass (just note the higher price tag). The Shapeoko 5 Pro is pretty close to being as good as the HDM (when you add Carbide 3D's VFD spindle to it) at a cheaper price point and it has a larger cutting size option available than the Shapeoko HDM. The Shapeoko 5 Pro is also a great option for international customers that have wanted to buy an HDM, but haven’t been able to get one.
What routers are compatible with the Shapeoko 5 Pro CNC?
- The Shapeoko 5 Pro is compatible with the Carbide Compact Router and VFD Spindle (by Carbide 3D), both available as checkout options. Other routers with a 65mm spindle are compatible, like the Makita RT0701C. Please note, the DeWalt 611 has a 69mm router and will not fit the Shapeoko 4.
How big is the Shapeoko 5?
- The Shapeoko 5 Pro comes in three different sizes
- Shapeoko 2x2 Cutting Area Size (X x Y): 24.53" x 24.53" (623mm x 623mm)
- Shapeoko 4x2 Cutting Area Size (X x Y): 48.7" x 24.53" (1237 mm x 623 mm)
- Shapeoko 4x4 Cutting Area Size (X x Y): 48.7" x 48.7" (1237 mm x 1237 mm)
- 4" remains as the clearance under the gantry (Z).
Will there be a 4x8 size for the Shapeoko 5?
- Currently, there are no plans from Carbide 3D to release a 4x8 machine.
Will the Shapeoko 5 Pro work with 220 volts?
- The Shapeoko 5 Pro electronics are compatible with 220V power.
What Materials can I cut with the Carbide 3D Shapeoko 5 CNC?
- All Types of Wood
- Hardwoods, such as maple, ash, birch, cherry, walnut, white oak, and more
- Softwoods, such as pine, cedar, balsa, and fir
- Most Plastics, such as:
- ABS, Delrin (Acetal), Polypropylene, Polycarbonate, Acrylic (PMMA), Nylon, PET, PEEK, PVC, Polyethylene, and more
- Non-ferrous Metals, such as:
- Aluminum, brass, and copper (some alloys are more suitable for machining)
- Synthetics, composites, and more such as:
- Renshape and other Polyurethane resins with fillers, carbon fiber, wax, and foams
Please note, certain dusts from materials are not healthy to inhale and should be properly researched before using. Always research and wear the proper safety equipment while operating a CNC machine.
What Materials can I engrave with the Carbide 3D Shapeoko 5 Pro CNC?
- Materials listed above
- Stone and Ceramic
- Please note that with this type of cutting method, ceramics and stones do not cut well. Only engraving is recommended when using this machine on these two materials.
What else do I need to provide to get the Shapeoko 5 running?
- 65mm trim router (if you chose to not include a router with your Shapeoko purchase)
- Windows or Mac computer
- Shop vacuum (technically optional, but HIGHLY recommended to minimize health hazards and keep your workspace clean)
Is the Shapeoko 5 Pro CNC expensive?
- No! You're getting a great deal on the Shapeoko 5 Pro that other CNC routers on the market can't do at the same price point.
What is the return policy for the Shapeoko 5 Pro?
- Please note that returns are not accepted on opened kits. Only new, unopened kits may be returned within 30 days of purchase. If a part from the kit is determined to be defective during the warranty period, a replacement part will be supplied.
