By Popular Demand
3D Printing is an amazing place to be today because of the strong and forward thinking community we have built. Over the past several months, that community has rallied behind the concept of a print-at-home spool and manufacturer provided refill packs, instead of a throw away spool each and every time. As the community has grown, so too has the amount of empty spools we all generate, and when Richard Horne released the first version of his Master Spool design he answered the question many had been asking - why do I have to keep buying more spools? It makes sense to have a single, reusable spool that can simply be refilled when the time comes, but for the idea to truly work the suppliers in the market have to take part as well. It was made clear to us at MatterHackers that the community cared about this idea, and when we decided to create this offering we found Village Plastics. They have been part of the 3D printing industry for some time, and were already developing the KVP Filament Koil. With our powers combined, MatterHackers is now the place to buy your Master Spool filament refills, in the form of the KVP Filament Koil.
Maximum Compatibility
With the Filament Koil, making sure you have a compatible spool is massively important. The RichRap v4 spool will accept these 1kg refills, but you will not be able to screw the two halves completely closed, as the spool was designed for 850g of filament. KVP also partnered with Slant3D to design their own version of a spool for the KVP Filament Koil. MatterHackers has created our own spool design to accept the KVP Koil specifically, the design is in the final phases of testing before release and we'll have it out this week.
We have found that spool loading works best by starting to thread the two halves together, then removing the tie wraps before completely tightening down the spool.
How to properly care for your Filament Koil
There has been some worry about filament without a spool and the potential for tangles. The fact of the matter is that it's impossible for filament to be manufactured with tangles, the only way to tangle filament is to not keep proper tension on the filament and letting it wrap around itself. The same is true of these filament Koils - they are tightly wound from the factory and will not tangle unless handled improperly. To ensure a good experience, follow these steps:
- Keep the tie wraps on your filament Koil until it's securely loaded onto your spool
- When removing the tie wraps, hold the end of the filament tight to keep tension on it
- When not in use, ensure the filament end is securely held onto the spool, just like with regular spools
- If you need to remove the filament from the spool, put new tie wraps on before taking the spool apart
What's in the Box?
- 1 KVP Filament Koil, vacuum sealed
- 1 Extra label to be applied outside the spool you load the Koil on
Technical Specifications
As we have been testing the KVP PLA, we found the following settings work best:
- Hotend Temperature: 225°C
- Bed Temperature: 50°C (no heated bed required for PLA - but if you have one, best to turn it on)
- Print Surface: We have been printing on glass with Magigoo with great success
Filament Specifications:
- Weight: 1kg
- Diameter: 1.75mm ±0.05mm
