What's the Workflow for 3D Printing Investment Casting Patterns?
3D printed patterns are transforming investment casting, superseding wax molds to deliver complex forms and accelerated design processes without dedicated equipment.
To create a 3D printed pattern, the process typically looks like the following:
- Shell, lattice, and add drain holes to the part with a tool like Materialise Magics or Formware
- Orient, support, and slice the pattern in PreForm
- Print the pattern
- Wash, post-cure, and remove supports
- Plug any drain holes with wax or cure a small amount of Clear Cast Resin over the hole
- Attach the pattern to a casting tree and proceed with the rest of the casting process

Will the Bambu A1 3D printer use filament from other 3D printers? I'm a teacher whose Makerbot died. I'm going to purchase another 3D Printer that can print multiple filament colors at the same time. CNET recommended this as the best overall printer, and from what I've seen, I'm sold!
Yes, all Bambu Lab printers are considered compatible with a wide variety of materials from other, non-Bambu Lab branded filaments! As long as the filaments are 1.75mm in diameter and have a melting point within the Bambu Lab's maximum hotend temperature of 300 degrees Celsius, then you should be all set.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to us at sales@matterhackers.com if you have need for any additional clarification. We'd love the chance to speak with you more about these materials, the Bambu Lab A1 3D printer combo, and your projects!
