*PETG is a partially hygroscopic material, meaning that it naturally absorbs moisture from its environment. This can cause printing issues if it absorbs too much moisture. To counteract it, using a filament dryer to actively remove the moisture within the filament and a storage container (ideally with dessiccant) when not in use is recommended.

FAQ

Do I need to use the cooling fan with PETG?

If you are looking for a nice surface finish, yes.

If you are looking for strong and durable parts, no.

If you are looking for the best of both worlds, 20% ON.


What are the differences between PETG and PLA?

COMPOSITION
PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol) is a thermoplastic polyester, while PLA (Polylactic Acid) is a biodegradable thermoplastic derived from renewable resources like cornstarch or sugarcane.

PRINTING TEMPERATURE
PETG generally requires a higher printing temperature than PLA. The recommended printing temperature for PETG is around 220°C - 250°C, while PLA is typically printed at temperatures around 190°C - 220°C.

STRENGTH & DURABILITY
PETG has higher impact resistance and flexibility compared to PLA. It is less brittle and more resistant to deformation under stress. PLA, on the other hand, is relatively rigid and can be more brittle.

HEAT RESISTANCE
PETG has better heat resistance compared to PLA. It has a higher glass transition temperature, which means it can withstand higher temperatures before deforming. PLA has a lower heat resistance and can start to soften and deform at lower temperatures.

PRINTABILITY
PLA is generally easier to print with and has less tendency for warping or curling during the printing process. PETG can be more prone to issues like stringing and requires proper bed adhesion and temperature control.

APPLICATIONS
PLA is commonly used for printing prototypes, hobbyist projects, and decorative items. PETG is preferred for functional parts, mechanical components, and objects that require higher durability, impact resistance, and heat resistance.


Will the spools work in an AMS?

Yes. Polymaker redesigned the edges of their spools so all Polymaker products have better compatibility in the Bambu Lab AMS.


Is this material food safe?

Polymaker does not have data regarding whether or not this material is food safe.

Currently, no 3D printing material on the market is FDA food-safe compliant. To be certified as food safe, the actual object needs to be certified, not the base material.

The shape, bed used, environment the object was made, and much more go into getting a food safety certificate.

Currently, there is no certification that the FDA offers for 3D printing.


Does Polymaker sell refills?

Polymaker does not offer PolyLite ABS refills at this time. However, MH Build PETG Refills in 1.75mm are available.

I agree with Don that it would be great to have more technical detail about nGen vs. PETG. nGen seems to be a lot tougher, actually remarkably strong when compared to the brittle PETG. I would like to know about, 1) the UV resistance and, 2) the glass transition temp (temperature tolerance of finished prints). Thanks

Hi, I read that PETG and nGen are quite similar. PETG has UV resistance, but I can’t seem to determine if nGen i has it as well. Could I get some information regarding the comparative UV resistance between the two. Thanks.
